History of Potteryland
Potteryland was founded June 22, 1956, by Donald and Shirley Adam. That year around metropolitan Detroit, indoor malls were opening up with names like Northland, Eastland, Southland and Westland; so Potteryland seemed like a good fit.
Donald poured a concrete frog in a mold that he learned to make by researching information at the Detroit Public Library. The mold was made in the family kitchen oven.
The frog sold in the front yard of the home where other things were displayed from pottery manufacturing centers in Zanesville, Ohio. In the early days, a small china and gift shop was also on the premises.
In 1989 Gary and Colleen Adam purchased the business from Gary's parents, and years later would bring their sons Chad and Troy into the family business. In 1996 Potteryland began offering Massarelli Lawn Ornaments to local Michigan customers, and in 2008 we launched our website and began shipping Massarelli's garden accents all over the United States. On July 31st 2017 after 61 years of business in the same location, Gary and Colleen retired and permanently closed the retail store. Our online store will keep the legacy and the name alive while allowing a more flexable work schedule that the family always desired. The business as it began, is still a family business within the same family. We appreciate you supporting a small family business!
